a signal to tell me to relax.
A few long minutes passed before a
gobble boomed from the valley.
While we had decided the descent
and climb toward the roost was too
tough for us to negotiate in such a short
time, the birds were having no problem.
In less than 10 minutes, they had cut the
distance to us in half.
I set my slate call down and shouldered my shotgun.
The toms were now gobbling every
few yards. I could tell they were just
over the bank, on the road where
Hoot's truck was parked. They'd still
have an extremely steep climb to make
it the rest of the way to us, and my
mind began playing out all possible
scenarios.
Would they spot the truck, and would
it matter? Would they climb that last
steep grade?
I gently purred and clucked, but this
time, they didn't answer.
Are they coming in cautiously? Did
we spook them?
COMING BACK
My mind flooded with memories of
the last time Pops and I hunted together.
On that day, I was adjusting a video
camera when I heard sharp putting
from a gobbler that had been coming
to us. He spooked and moved off, and I
looked up just in time to see Pops lower
his shotgun and look at me with those
"you dummy" eyes.
The snap of a twig just over the
ridge's point brought me back to reality.
And as the gobblers appeared, the
early morning light reflected off their
bronze backs, bright white heads and
red necks.
As both birds disappeared behind
a big oak, I heard the subtle click of
Pops pulling back the hammer on his
shotgun.
Slowly, the toms stepped out, and I
whispered to Pops to shoot the second
one, which had the longer beard.
The gobblers no sooner separated
when Pops slapped the trigger.
The bird folded at the shot, as the
other tom putted while running off.
I glanced down at my shotgun, but
decided the day was perfect as it was.
Pops had bagged his last gobbler.
Sitting there, though, I had to wonder
if the fall and winter would pass without Pops again talking about one more
time, and if his back and mine wouldn't
be up against a massive oak again next
spring.
