Hit the vitals too high and your arrow
may miss the near lung while clipping
the far one.
Hit the vitals too low and you'll
pierce the near but pass beneath the
far lung.
Preferred shooting angles would be
45 degrees or greater.
Given the width of a deer's chest
area - about 16 inches - a 45-degree
angle would allow a well-placed arrow
to penetrate high on the near lung and
low on the far one.
In other words, the closer to horizontal the shot, the larger the target; the
closer to vertical, the smaller.
One Lung or Two?
While a tree stand placed 20 to 30
feet high might help conceal the bowhunter above a deer's line of sight, the
height makes for a steeper, riskier shot
at deer 10 to 20 yards away.
Of course, there are plenty of other
factors that affect shot difficulty - deer
beyond 30 yards, the position of the
deer, as well as deer movement and
behavior.
Anything other than a double-lung
shot may result in long tracking chores
and, potentially, lost game.
Hunting from accommodating
heights and taking shots only at effective distances at broadside and quartering away deer surely will help your
proficiency.
The bulk of my bowhunting occurs
in a suburban setting on small woodlots
often surrounded by posted property.
I don't want an arrowed deer seeking
refuge on adjoining acreage, and the
best way to prevent this from happening
is with a pass-through shot penetrating
both lungs.
This always has resulted in an ample

blood trail and deer that don't go more
than 50 to 60 yards.
Learning Experience
Many years ago, I was hunting from
a climbing stand, up about 25 feet,
when I grunted in a nice 9-pointer. As
he approached, I came to full draw and
waited for him to turn broadside. But
he never did.
The buck approached the base of the
poplar I was up, peering into the underbrush until he stood almost directly
beneath me. I held seemingly forever
on the motionless buck as it faced me.
After a while, even with my bow's
50 percent let-off, I could feel the strain
in my arm.
If I let the draw down, I knew the
buck would hightail it, so I decided to
take the shot. The angle was around 5
degrees - pretty much straight down.
I put the sight pin high on his back,
angling for a spine shot, and released
the arrow.
My arrow disappeared between the
buck's shoulders just off to one side of
the buck's spine.
As the buck bolted away, I could
see the arrow's fletchings still visible
above his back.
It wasn't the pass-through shot for
which I had hoped. There would be no
blood trail.
But I was lucky that long-ago morning.
Despite not finding one drop of
blood, after a half hour of circling back
and forth, I managed to recover that
heart-shot buck in a clearing about 100
yards from my stand.
Today, I'd never try that shot. I rely
on the right triangle to get the shot right.
It'll work for you, too, if you give it a
shot.
