to walk uphill to calls. That way, they
can pitch off the hillside and fly away if
they feel threatened.
Even near towns and businesses, gobblers can be quirky.
"Sometimes nothing bothers them,"
Casalena said. "Other times they run
from sudden noises. But these birds
usually will come back if you call again
after the disturbance subsides. Often
reassuring calls, like purring, or even
the cackle or raspy yelp of a dominant
hen, will pull that gobbler back to you."
Other Thoughts
Although Pennsylvania isn't exactly
a large state - 33rd in geographic size -
there is still fluctuation in temperature
between its southern to northern borders,
a distance of more than 150 miles.
That distance, and changes in elevation, even within regions, can cause
temperature fluctuation that influences
green-up in the woods.
The quicker green-up occurs, the
quicker visibility in the woods will
decrease. So if you hop around during
the season, consider moving from lower
to higher elevations as the season progresses. It'll ensure you'll have a better
field of vision for most of the season.
If gobblers have avoided you in recent
years, Casalena recommends staying at
your first calling location at least one to
two hours if you heard a gobble upon
arrival.
"Chances are he'll come in eventually," she said. "But he might not be in
a hurry - he has all day!"
It might be a good idea to try calling differently, if birds aren't coming,
Casalena suggested. Go softer if you
call somewhat loudly; try a different call.
Move on to another call location; make
sure you're concealed and comfortable.

Also hunt against a solid backstop
when possible to break up your outline
and for protection from hunters who
might approach you from the rear.
Casalena offered some thoughts
on what scares gobblers the most. Of
course, being shot at and missed is right
up there. So, too, are excessive hunting
pressure, which she said spooks them the
longest, and too much calling.
Accidentally spooking a gobbler
coming in to a call, to the point where
it runs or flies away, is still a winnable battle, Casalena said. But give
the spooked tom a week; then call from
somewhere else and try a different set-up
and call.
