"We have no idea why cannibalism
occurred," Lovallo said.
The biologist didn't believe it
stemmed from genetic variation (West
Virginia versus Pennsylvania clan),
or nutritional need. Such aggression
is rarely recorded within a mammal
species, but does occur in insects and
reptiles. It's a finding that has stumped
biologists.
Over the past 20 years, Pennsylvania has become a certified fisher state.
Trapper harvests during a short season
have averaged about 420 fishers over the
past two years. More than 1,400 fishers
each year are estimated to be captured
out of season and released by trappers.
And more and more Pennsylvanians are
seeing them afield, or crossing highways
in front of cars.
"The best news from Pennsylvania's
fisher harvests is that they're are having
no impact on the fisher population's
growth," Lovallo noted. "The harvest has
been predictable based on the number of
permits issued each year. What's more,
adding WMU 1B to the annual fisher
season informed us that fisher densities
in our northwestern counties are likely
higher than we believed."
Lovallo believes the fisher will continue to expand its range in the state, as
well as southward in the Appalachian
Mountains. They've already made it
to northern Virginia, he pointed out.
Within 10 years, they undoubtedly will
be in more of Pennsylvania's counties,
meaning additional Wildlife Management Units could be opened to fisher
trapping.
Those are signs of an ascending species, one that has found its niche and
seems destined to keep its expansion in
play. It's seems unlikely fishers should
have risen so quickly on a landscape
where development devours wild places
daily. But they're not alone. Other furbearers - minks, river otters, bobcats,
coyotes - also have thrived.
There's no doubt the fisher's future is
promising in Pennsylvania and among
the Mid-Atlantic States. It's a species
Lovallo suspects might recolonize its
historic range through the Appalachians,
which extended into Tennessee. The table
remains set for this species to continue
flourishing. All it really needs is time -
and maybe a few squirrels to go!

Another wildlife success story, the fisher's comeback in
the Keystone State has been nothing short of amazing.
Young are completely dependent on their mothers
when born in March or early April, but they develop
quickly, and by 4 months old, they're efficient at taking
small prey. Trappers this year have more opportunity to
harvest fishers, as the season, which runs Dec. 17-28,
has been doubled in the 13 WMUs with an open season.
