WOODCHUCK ISLAND B ILL FULMER AND I were friends, and I loaded ammunition for him fairly often. One day I asked him how he managed to go through so many rounds. He responded by saying he used them shooting groundhogs. Bill was a longtime land manager for the Game Commission, working out of Bloomsburg and Lehighton. And among the many properties he oversaw was an about 300-acre island in the middle of the Susquehanna River. I don't remember if the island had a name, or its exact location. I can only tell you it was about an hour's drive north from where I lived in Mechanicsburg. But there were more groundhogs on that island than anyone could count. This is where Bill emptied most of the cartridges I loaded for him. When he asked me to come along with him to the island sometime, I went, of course, then did so as often as possible. The best groundhog hunting I ever enjoyed was in the middle of the Susquehanna River. JULY 2016 21
