Sweet 16, made from 1937 to 1976, then
again from 1987 to 1993, today is a collector's firearm.
And over the past 30 years, it seems
like every now and then the 16-gauge sees
a resurgence of sorts, and recently it has
been gaining some ground.
Back in 2002, Remington made a
limited run in its Model 870 pump and
sold out.
Ithaca recently chambered it again in
its Model 37, and Browning has in its
newly designed semi-auto A5 and BPS
pump models.
There also are correct-framed doubles
from several U.S manufacturers, and
European manufacturers have kept it in
their lineups.

Over the past 10 years or so, ammunition makers also have modernized
16-gauge loads.
There still are the reliable standards of
1- and 11/8-ounce loads, but also 1¼- and
15/16-ounce loads, with No. 8, 7½, 6, 5
and 4 shot with velocities from 1,150 to
1,400 fps.
For waterfowl hunters there are No. 2
steel and No. 4 Hevi-Shot loads.
Deer hunters have the 4/5-ounce (350
grains) and 1-ounce slug loads from Winchester, Federal, Remington and others.
Some hunters I know mentioned the
idea of a 16-gauge 3-inch magnum shotshell that would rival the 3-inch 12-gauge
and surpass the 20-gauge 3-inch load.
None of them really thought it was necessary for 90 percent of hunting applications, though.
Usually when something is reliable,
without a lot of fanfare, it gets taken for
granted.
It's kind of like the employee who isn't
noticed, but is always there to make things
work. To me that describes the 16-gauge
and qualifies it as the sweet 16.
