Who Started You?
A
RECENT survey by Southwick Associates, a fish and wildlife economics
and statistics firm, for the National Shooting Sports Foundation reinforced
how young and new hunters get their start in the sport and where they get their
information.
I've mentioned before, that unlike many hunters, I didn't come from a hunting
family. When I was 12 years old, a classmate was talking about hunting and all the
adventures he and his dad experienced in the fields and forests of Penn's Woods.
I was intrigued.
My parents were friends with a neighbor down the road who hunted, and I can
remember one fall day seeing him get out of his jeep holding a couple of ringnecks.
I was more intrigued.
To make a long story short, my dad started hunting to take me, and we did
hunt a few times with the neighbor down the street. My dad and I, with the help
of that neighbor, learned together. And during that time, I devoured every book
and magazine about hunting I could get my hands on.
My dad took a few bucks and a couple of does, and some small game, but
when I turned 16, I began hunting alone or with high-school friends who had
grown up hunting with their families. I learned from them.
That interest and passion for hunting fueled my desire to attend college in a
wildlife management curriculum.
Getting back to the survey by Southwick Associates, 72 percent of survey
takers said parents took them hunting most often, and taught them about hunting,
at a young age.
Recognizing that people often select their lifelong interests early in life, wildlife
agencies, and all who are committed to maintaining our hunting heritage, must
recognize the need to capture the interest of future hunters at a young age is critical.
In an age when information is readily available online and in print, there are
a multitude of avenues hunters can use to obtain information about best places
and techniques for hunting. But where do they turn the most?
According to the survey, hunters predominantly turn to friends and family who
are experienced hunters when seeking information.
Second in the survey, hunters look to state fish and wildlife agency websites
for information.
As with most things, it's not surprising that Mom and Dad have the most
influence on their children. We who cherish the outdoors sure hope that includes
perpetuating our hunting heritage.
