a buck appeared and stopped broadside at
60 yards. I took a deep breath, settled the
sights and squeezed the trigger.
The morning sky filled with white
smoke. I struggled to see through it, then
saw the buck thrashing on the ground in
front of me.
I threw my backpack over one shoulder
and slowly made my way to the buck,
which by that point lay motionless in
the brush, a perfectly placed bullet hole
behind its shoulder.
The buck sported a 6-point rack with a
16-inch spread. I was elated. I tagged my
buck, then started off on the long drag.
After an hour, I spotted a Game Commission vehicle slowly traveling the main
road, and was glad the officer stopped to
help me with the buck, which we loaded
in his truck to take it back to the visitor
center.
I was amazed at the number of people
who had assembled in the parking lot to

wait for hunters to return.
Several of them helped to lift my
trophy to the roof of my VW, where I
secured it with a rope I threaded through
the side windows to ensure it would stay
put, then headed for home.
My family has a tradition - whenever a
deer is harvested, the hunter makes a mark
on his gunstock to remember the hunt.
In the hours following that hunt at
Middle Creek, I broke down the muzzleloader for its final cleaning of the year
while heating the metal end of a screwdriver on the stove.
It soon turned a glowing orange.
And as I reflected on the day's hunt and
how lucky I was to have experienced it,
I pressed the screwdriver's tip into the
Thompson's stock and made an "X."
Over the years, I would harvest many
more bucks, and make many more marks
on gunstocks.
But few are more memorable.
