G BUCK-HARVEST TREND CONTINUE?

HE COMING of deer season never
gets old.
Looking back to last year, you
wonder whether you should have tried
something different, went somewhere
else.
Or maybe you're still on that victory
lap, reveling in all that went right for you,
or someone close.
Either way, the magic of a new deer
season - and the suspense that accompanies it - draws us to buy our licenses,
practice with our bows and rifles, and
anxiously await those openers that cause
us sleeplessness.
Deer hunting in Pennsylvania is as
old as our hills. From the days of Daniel
Boone to today, autumn has stoked our
urge to be in the deer woods.
It's when those memories come rolling
back and the promise of coming hunts
draws us to our gear and the woods.
A GOOD YEAR
During the 2016-17 deer seasons, hunters took an estimated 333,254 whitetails,
up from an estimated 315,813 in the 201516 seasons and an estimated 303,973 in
the 2014-15 season.
Consider those numbers for a moment.
Pennsylvania hunters came within
about 50,000 whitetails of taking a million
deer over the past three hunting-license
years.
When coupled with the bigger bucks
being taken in just about every corner of
the Commonwealth, it means opportunity
abounds in the Keystone State.
Although the past two years of deer

harvests - and buck harvests - have been
substantial, some of their gains can be
attributed to the bottom-scraping harvest
of 2014-15, the lowest in Pennsylvania
since 1986.
It positioned Pennsylvania's herd to
grow. Reductions in annual antlerless
license allocations in recent years also
have allowed deer populations to grow.
The buck kill - 149,460 - increased
9 percent from 2015 to 2016. It also
increased 15 percent from 2014 to 2015.
So hunters have had back-to-back good
buck seasons.
What's more, those bucks are older
- maybe smarter - than the bucks that
typically made up the state's buck harvest
15 to 20 years ago.
"Without a doubt, the buck age structure is older now," noted Chris Rosenberry, supervisor of the Game Commission's Deer and Elk Section. "In 2016-17,
Pennsylvania hunters harvested more
adult bucks - 2½ years and older - than
in the previous 20 years, possibly ever."
Fifty-six percent were at least 2½
years old; 44 percent were 1½ years old
or younger.
So older bucks - usually with bigger
racks - are becoming more and more the
norm in Pennsylvania's harvests.
But there's still potential for the buck
harvest to grow, Rosenberry said.
The 2016-17 buck harvest was the
second-largest in the antler-restrictions
era. The best - 165,416 - was posted in
the 2002-03, which, because it was the
first year of antler restrictions, comprised
more younger bucks.
"I wouldn't be surprised if the buck
