rates, the format didn't last.
In most years in the 1940s and '50s,
the season opened the Monday after
Thanksgiving.
But prior to 1937, the season consistently was set to open Dec. 1, regardless
the day of the week. A similar framework
that timed buck season to open Nov. 15
was in place prior to that.
Using a consistent date meant there
would be several years when the opener
identified in the published list of seasons
and bag limits was a Sunday.
But don't be fooled.
A closer look at language accompanying these lists explains the season includes
the start and end dates listed, excepting
Sundays. In years Dec. 1 fell on a Sunday,
the season opened Monday, Dec. 2 - and
apparently hunters were familiar enough
with the system that they weren't confused.
There were a couple years, too - 1928
and 1938 - when buck hunting was
closed entirely and the season never saw
an opening day.
From 1944 through 1946, Pennsylvania opted to return to opening its buck
season on Dec. 1, bringing about Friday
and Saturday openers in 1944 and 1945.
But since Dec. 1 fell on a Sunday in 1946,
the actual opener on Dec. 2 fell on the
Monday after Thanksgiving.
In 1969, several years following the
late-starting seasons of the early 1960s,
the Game Commission announced
it would make it policy to open buck
season on the Monday after Thanksgiving. There's nothing on the books today
that requires a Monday opener. But by
consistently opening the season on the
same week, hunters who had to schedule
vacations early each calendar year knew
when to take them.
The same holds true today, as it has for
more than half a century.
But even if a different opener were
established, it would be a return to the way
things once were rather than the start of
something entirely new.
In 1946, buck season was set
to open on Dec. 1 - a Sunday.
Even though the season didn't
actually open until Monday,
Dec. 2, the Dec. 1 opener was
referenced on all lists of seasons
and bag limits, including the
list illustrated by Jacob Bates
Abbott, shown at left. That's
the way things were done back
then. The chart shown at the top
of the page explains the seasons
include both dates provided,
Sundays excepted.
