"When deer are lost to a disease, or even hunting, on a landscape with good habitat, deer populations recover quickly." EHD does cause some concern among hunters. In 2007, a Game Commission survey revealed about a quarter of deer hunters in Wildlife Management Unit 2A were compelled to hunt less because of the presence of EHD. Most hunters, however, hunted about the same number of days they hunted the previous year and noted EHD did not affect their willingness to take a deer. Kramer and Yeck both recognized tremendous concern among hunters in their county last year. "Imagine if you hunt the family farm and 16 or so deer turn up dead on it from EHD," Kramer said. "It's really With only a short tail to swat flies, deer have a limited defense against biting insects. And when they're coerced by weather to visit water sources that often are prime midge habitat - when the insect's seasonal activity is peaking and the disease is present - it doesn't bode well for whitetails.
