The Cubby Set The cubby set is almost every land trapper's first set. Once a staple for raccoon and 'possum trappers, it has graduated into a go-to set for both bobcats and fishers. The cubby's simplicity is what makes the set's use so widespread. It's an enclosure with lure and/or bait placed inside to draw in a furbearer. Patterned after deadfalls Native Americans and colonial trappers used, which killed animals trying to enter an enclosure, the cubby instead uses a steel trap to capture the animal. A typical cubby is a three-sided structure with a roof made of rocks or deadwood. Usually leaf or plant litter is used to camouflage the structure's outside. With a height of about 6 inches and a width of 6 to 8 inches, the cubby should be 16 to 18 inches deep. The long chamber keeps bait from being visible from the air and out of the reach of furbearers. Although an occasional gray fox will be taken in a cubby, coyotes and red foxes tend to steer clear of them. For trapping raccoons and that occasional gray, use a No. 1½ coil spring trap. A No. 2 coil spring will work well on bobcats and fishers. Traps should be offset of center, and 4 inches back for raccoons, 6 inches back for bobcats and fishers. 20
