FOX

ITH THE SUN SHINING and
about 15 inches of soft snow on the
ground, I decided to go rabbit hunting one
cold February day, years ago.
Making my way across an open field to
the end of a hedgerow, I no sooner began
working the thick edge cover when a
rabbit bounced out and ran for the center
of the row.
I fired a shot and trudged through the
snow to where I last saw the rabbit.
I saw no signs of a hit, and the rabbit's
tracks revealed it was having an easier
time than me, running on the snow without sinking in. I'd already worked up quite
a sweat, so I decided to rest in a nearby
woodlot where I could hunt squirrels
while cooling down, motionless, against a
tree. I hadn't been standing against the big
oak for 15 minutes when a squirrel came
out on a branch. It tumbled to the ground,
and into the snow, at my shot.
I let the squirrel lie, hoping another

would show itself.
After about 20 minutes, a red fox
trotted down the trail, carrying a rabbit.
When it reached my tracks, it stopped and
dropped the bunny.
I thought it might have winded the
squirrel, which was only 5 feet away.
But it just continued down the trail
without the rabbit.
About 20 minutes later, the fox came
back up the trail, and I presumed - incorrectly - that it came back for the rabbit.
Instead, it just ambled out of sight.
Looking at the rabbit, I wondered if
it was the same one I'd kicked from the
hedgerow, and if I really had missed it,
even though I'd seen no sign of a hit.
But what I really couldn't understand
was why the fox abandoned the rabbit,
especially at a time of year when food
is scarce.
Could the fox have felt sorry for me
missing the rabbit earlier?
