Tom said.
Tom was out of the hospital by late
October, and he soon was in his ground
blind, crossbow in hand, on property he
owns in Crawford County, southeast of
Meadville, near Black Ash.
"At that time I was in a weak state,
both physically and emotionally, but
when I was out hunting it gave me hope
I would still be able to do the things I
loved," Tom said.

And while a fuller recovery still was
months away, hunting ultimately would
provide Tom memories that would top
the dream season he'd experienced.

BEAR BY CHANCE

Tom had harvested bears in three
previous seasons, most recently in his
Quadruple Trophy year in 2010.
And he was excited for his prospects
in 2018. He'd seen bears all summer on
his property near Black Ash, and had
caught several on trail cameras there.
But they all but disappeared a month
before the statewide bear season.
Tom hunted out of a camp in Cameron County on Monday, Nov. 20 - the
only day he could hunt in the general
bear season - with no luck.
But where Tom hunts in WMU
1B, an extended bear season overlaps
with a portion of deer season. And on
Friday, Dec. 1, the next-to-last day of
the extended season, Tom put aside
concerns he'd spook deer and knock
them off their feeding patterns before
antlerless hunting opened on Saturday,
and he went out to enjoy a sunny afternoon with temperatures in the high 40s.
Tom kept his distance from the field
he watched. He considered the hunt as
