would be . . . an exercise. Being open to
possibilities, but having zero experience
typically doesn't offer much promise.
One thing this did promise, however,
was the chance to take my father's Ithaca
M-66 Super Single 12-gauge - a gun he
might never have hunted with - out for
some action. That alone got my juices
flowing. Its light modified barrel with
3-inch chamber seemed a great match
for the quarry we had in mind, and it was
"Dad's gun!"
It was kind of cool getting the "guided
treatment" and I was happy to have a
scenic view and a comfortable spot where
Travis had recently seen some activity. He
set up about 150 yards below me. Legal
shooting started at 5:35 a.m. and as that
late-April day brightened, I sat back and
took in a wonderful view of the town,
listened to critters make their morning
songs, and breathed in the damp scent
of moist earth - all of which made the
morning instantly worthwhile.
Sitting there daydreaming, and not
expecting anything other than hearing a
gunshot from another direction perhaps,

I noticed movement about 40 yards to
my left, through the brushy cover I was
nestled behind.
To my disbelief, a turkey was moving
toward my decoy. Then another, and two
more. Seven birds were in the group, all
with beards. My cover offered me a small
window to get my shotgun up and ready
for a 25-yard shot when they cleared the
bushes. Two birds were clearly bigger and
had longer beards than the rest. Incredibly
excited, I couldn't believe my luck.
One of the smaller birds took the lead
toward the hen decoy, but just as soon did
an about face. Others followed suit, and
their turning gave me a clear shot at one
of the larger birds. Laying the bead of
dad's smoothbore right at the top of the
neck, I knew this was a one chance deal.
I squeezed off my shot.
What a thrill! The other birds took
off flying and running out of sight. One
remained flapping in the field just yards
away from my decoy. What an experience,
and being "given" the opportunity made
it sweet in its own way. I stayed put and
spent time monitoring action down by
Travis. Though some
noticeably larger toms
came close to his position, mine was the only
bird taken that day.
Not being a lifelong
hunter, I'm still afforded
some of those "firsts"
along the way. I have
never taken them for
granted, and never will.
It is farmland, clean
air, great game, and time
with friends that makes it
all worthwhile.
Seeing Dad's Ithaca
in action made this one
extra special for me.
