Sometimes a favorite hunting spot is just that - a multipurpose parcel where we wait for deer, pot for squirrels, thin
woodchucks, and in the spring of the year, call to turkeys.
As you do your best to coax gobblers to these favorite
spots this season, look around. Is there a tree stand still
hanging nearby?
While much is unknown about tree stand falls and their
causes, in Pennsylvania, structural failure of the stand is the
leading cause of documented falls where the cause is identified. Fifty-two percent of such falls are due to stand failure.
While wearing a full-body harness - and keeping it
attached to the tree at all times while hunting from a tree
stand, climbing or descending - virtually eliminates the possibility of a severe fall to the ground, other safety measures
also should be followed.
The Treestand Manufacturer's Association, a nonprofit
trade association promoting tree-stand safety, recommends
leaving stands out for no more than two weeks at a time.
While this guideline might seem extreme, there's no
denying that every day a tree stand is kept in storage, protected from the elements and potential damage caused by
animals or tree growth, will help to increase its lifespan and
preserve its structural integrity.
Taking a stand down now will spare it from months of
summer heat and storms - maybe even another snow - and
allow you to inspect the platform, seat and all climbing aids,
straps, buckles and safety ropes for wear or damage, well
ahead of the next time you'll need it for hunting.
Replacement parts that might be needed should come
only from the original manufacturer and if they're unavailable, or if equipment can't be repaired by the manufacturer
or equipment has exceeded its recommended expiration
date, it should be destroyed and replaced with new equipment. Even with a brand new tree stand, a hunter always
should wear a full-body safety harness when installing or
using it. But stands in top condition simply are less likely
to fail.
