comb. In another pocket, I carried a small
peg-and-slate call.
Finally, I could make out the etched
lines of branches against the sky as night
eased imperceptibly to day and the woods
emerged, gray and primeval. I was nervous, hesitant to break the silence, feeling
like a student selected without warning to
read aloud in front of the class.
Spicules of moisture moved within the
thinner fog. No bird sang. I hedged some,
listening hard for a gobble. It was time to
move boldly. I would get the day rolling
like the crows who woke me every morning with their raucous reveille. I rolled out
a series of spirited, throaty caws until a
sudden, single gobble far down the steep
slope compelled me stop.
Setting up against a big oak, I began
yelping with the cedar scratch call, but
the dowel had dampened; all I could
muster were scraping sounds and clicks.
Switching to the peg-and-slate, I sent out
several strings of yelps that sounded sweet
and clear in the waterlogged air. A fierce
double-gobble, followed by another, set
my hands to shaking. Gaining confidence, I called louder and with

emotion. He gobbled again.
I waited two hours in the intensifying drizzle, clucking occasionally, but
never heard the gobbler again. I would
have waited longer, but the peg-and-slate
now was wet and useless, and the wind
had picked up. I left the woods satisfied,
though, having learned that calling was
like reading aloud, that you must recite it
like you wrote it. Don't just make turkey
sounds; tell him something!
In the way the identifying marks on
the barrel and receiver of my Winchester
Model 12 were made by striking punches
with a hammer, so, too, were that morning's gobbles: like hammer blows ringing across the mountaintop, marking
the steely armature of the hunter within,
forever distinguishing me as one of that
order of hunters who would forever celebrate the spring hunt. And so, it began.

I still carry my old Olt crow call on
a lanyard around my neck and, in my
pocket, the small peg-and-slate call. I
have a diaphragm call clipped to the bill
of my cap with which I do most of my
