HAVE a penchant for limited-edition things.
I drive a 2008 limited-edition Toyota FJ Cruiser SUV "Team Trails" model
that was limited to 3,200 vehicles. It has special emblems, and some equipment
not available on the standard models.
I have a limited-edition TNT Productions T-shirt from my days as an "extra"
in the "Gettysburg" movie many years ago. Only a few hundred people have that
shirt, and every time I see it in my drawer, it takes me back to some unforgetable
experiences.
My most treasured limited-edition items, however, are a couple of rifles.
People acquire fireams for a variety of reasons. To many hunters, guns are just
another tool for getting a job done; for putting meat in the freezer. And there are
plenty of well-made "economy" guns out there that will get the job done just fine.
I bought an inexpensive single-shot slug shotgun a few years ago to hunt outof-state, and killed two deer with it the first time I had it out.
The experience, though, just wasn't quite the same as if I had been carrying
either of my limited-edition rifles, although the deer certainly didn't know the
difference.
My Browning A-Bolt "Pronghorn Issue" .243 bolt-action made in 1987 and
limited to 500 rifles is my favorite rifle. I looked for years for one and finally
found No. 218 years ago. It is heavily engraved, gold-inlaid and has a fancy
walnut stock. The rifle hangs right under my pronghorn antelope mount in the
great room of our home. I love looking at the gun; it handles like a dream; and
it shoots as good as it looks.
My Browning 7mm Mag. Eurobolt bolt-action has an intricately customcarved stock featuring a bugling elk. It's one of a kind. I used it to take a bull
that was bugling and in the pose
somewhat like the figure carved
on the stock.
I learned long ago that the
true value in guns, especially
fine-looking limited-editions,
has less to do with function
and more with making dreams
come true and creating lasting
memories.
