The Keystone State is an ag state, and
for those born and raised in farm country,
there is deep connection to the land, which
provides its bounty each season for those
willing to put in hard work.
But even those growing up in other
areas likely can peer up into their family
trees and see a farmer, or several, sitting
on a branch or more.
We all have a connection to farmland,
and when we inhale an extra-deep breath
while driving past freshly plowed soil or
mowed hay, we soak in the smell of the
earth, of our heritage, of home.
When our ancestors worked this land,
their practices provided for the basic needs
of wildlife - cover, food, water and areas
to reproduce. These came in the form of
woodlots, brushy fencerows, overgrown
rocky outcroppings, weedy field corners,
crop stubble and fallow fields.
Ground-nesting pheasants, quail and
eastern meadowlarks thrived with latesummer hay mowing. Cultivation limited weeds, but didn't eliminate these
important fall and winter sources of
wildlife food and cover. There also was
a rich diversity of flowering forbs growing among the hay and along field edges
where pollinators found not only food, but

reproductive habitat.
As with all things, agriculture has
changed over the past 100 years. Hand
tools gave way to horses, then machinery,
which continues to grow larger. Small
family farms with small acreage and small
fields have been combined. And what
once was a land of diverse agriculture and
plants primarily plays host to a corn-andbean rotation.
It goes along with a producer's responsibility to feed the nation's many mouths.
And all the while, as the number of
people increase, giving rise to further
development, the easiest places to build a
new subdivision, warehouse or business
park are relatively flat and empty farm
fields.
This, in turn, creates a need to get more
out of the land, and has led to "clean farming" practices designed to do just that.
Hedgerows and woodlots are removed.
Topsoil is brought in to cover rocky outcrops. Herbicides and pesticides are used
to eradicate unwanted plants and insects.
Rotational hay is mowed three times a
year, beginning as early as May. And after
the harvest, crop residue often is mowed,
raked and baled for livestock bedding.
