efficient, little is left for wildlife, and
'land' is turned from a thriving community
to a cold and impassive commodity.
Soil is exhausted of nutrients, water is
polluted with chemical runoff, plant life
is restricted to a monoculture of crops,
and the sounds of birds and insects are
ominously absent.
But farmers don't have to choose
between one or the other.
Farmers are stewards of the land, and
many care deeply for the wildlife that
inhabits their properties. There always
has been room within the agricultural
landscape for wildlife, but landowners
must remember the importance of how
we fit into the greater land community.
As habitat losses continue to mount,
it's an approach with promise.
Planning for Wildlife
But how can we fit habitat into farm
planning without decreasing production
or losing profit?
There are two schools of thought. The
first is through land sparing, which sets
out to increase existing farmland yield
and productivity, freeing up land to be put
aside for biodiversity conservation.
As technology and farming practices

have advanced, it's taken less tillable
acreage to produce the same amount of
food. It's reasonable to expect even less
land can produce more food in the future,
and more land can be set aside for wildlife.
The Game Commission on several
state game lands has taken a similar
approach.
In some agricultural fields where
production was low, seasonal crops have
been replaced with native warm-season
grasses and forbs, which led to incredible
increase in grassland-bird use. Meanwhile, adjacent productive fields still are
being farmed.
A second concept to provide for wildlife is through wildlife-friendly farming.
Today's technology can identify
specific areas of fields where net loss
is occurring - often areas such as rocky
ridges with poor soil quality, steep slopes
that cause runoff, low-lying wet areas or
shaded field edges. Those areas then can
be transitioned into a wildlife-friendly
cover that not only can pay for itself
but turn a profit for the farmer through
conservation-assistance programs.
Many agricultural practices that greatly
benefit wildlife don't require a producer
to completely alter his or her operation.
