complex network of arteries that carry
water from the enormous flat above to the
creek far below.
My mountain is like the movement -
the clockworks - of my watch; the stream
below, the numerated face. The mountain
powers the creek with seeps, runoffs from
violent storms, winter snows, and the
slow, steady drip, drip, dripping of countless water drops falling from waxy beech
leaves and the ends of twigs and fern tips.
As Burroughs once noted, one usually
can tell the season just by listening. The
full creek of March, when the water is
high runs quiet, as the rocks and gravel
bars and debris lie beneath the waters. The
gurgling of the creek in August is muffled
by leaves and grasses and masses of water
plants. But the creek in late autumn is
loudest, as water froths over the exposed
gravel, is cleaved by stones and chugs
hollowly behind perpendicular logs.
The stuff of fantasy often involves
going back in time. This is evidenced in
the creek, as water is pushed back upon
the main current when striking an object,
or as an eddy along its periphery, where
small whirlpools spin before moving
onward.
The creek has given me a greater concept of time, and I know more about the
creek because I understand the magic of
the mountain.
Imaginings
Several days into writing this, I looked
up from the old cherry writing desk and
stared out the window, as writers and
artists often do, in search of a word that
escaped my thoughts. What I found
instead was a mourning dove only 7
feet away on her nest in the interior
of a shrub. Her mate cooed softly
nearby, and they exchanged

places incubating the two pale eggs in
the flimsy nest.
My thoughts quickly took wing.
Nestled there in quiet repose in its somber
brown and gray pelage, it was the epitome
of calmness and patience, that is, until I
looked at its dark, blue-ringed eye. There
was a familiar wildness in it, that same,
pure, fierce wildness that the eyes of every
wild creature reflect, be it a cottontail
rabbit, bull elk or bobcat.
I imagined this dove and perhaps
those yet in the eggs powering above late
summer fields of tasseled corn through a
low slant of orange light, wings whistling,
dark, beady eyes searching for a dusty
farm road to pick up grit or drink from a
shrinking puddle.
The dove's smooth, efficient silhouette
in flight is like some sleek art deco figurine, a masterpiece of design, perfect in
every way, a work of art in itself, a hood
ornament for nature.
I look at the dove but imagine a season.
I watch it fly and see the entire accordant
landscape of autumn.
