I

F YOU DIDN'T GROW UP in the fur
boom of late 1970s and early 1980s,
it might surprise you to learn there
was a time when trapping was almost as
popular as hunting.
Good money could be made by
trapping furbearers before school or work,
and on weekends. Some made enough to
purchase vehicles with the money they
made stringing steel.
But today, it's hard to find anyone
making money from trapping.
Fur prices are about as low as they can
get; even finding a fur-buyer isn't easy.
Still, trapping has its followers - 43,000 to
45,000 furtaker licenses are sold annually.
But just as in hunting, many trappers
have become specialists: trapping only
on water or land, or primarily interested
in the limited seasons for bobcats, fishers
and river otters.
Most trappers you encounter afield
today are dedicated to the pursuit. Pelt
prices aren't what drive them. Rather,
it's the excitement of checking a trapline,
the challenge of matching wits with wary
animals, and the sense of responsibility
to continue helping manage furbearer
populations.

IMPORTANT ROLE

The need to manage furbearers is
stronger today than ever, because there are
fewer furtakers and more Pennsylvanians.
Furbearers typically need to be managed
annually, because their numbers can

increase relatively quickly. And trapping
by licensed furtakers generally is the most
effective management method.
Along with helping to stabilize
furbearer populations, trappers play an
essential role in helping to minimize
property damages. Raccoons, for instance,
can raid crops, causing monetary losses
for farmers. Beavers likewise might take
down valuable timber or cause flooding
that carries off soil or compromises roads.
While trappers help to limit such
losses, with fur prices as lean as ever,
fewer trappers are afield. And in areas
where furbearers aren't being held in
check, trappers often find themselves in
demand.
Once trappers establish a relationship
with a landowner, and revisit regularly - at
least annually - to determine if they need
more assistance, word can travel fast in the
area. Before you know it, more people are
calling and asking if you'll trap on their
lands. For them, it's a far better choice
than paying a high bill for a nuisanceanimal-control specialist.
With limited competition, more
properties should be available to
prospecting trappers. Dress presentably
and knock on a few doors. Perhaps
coyotes can be targeted on one farm and
muskrats and beavers on the next. But
don't overwhelm yourself by making too
many commitments.
