It's often best to sight-in a bow by
starting at a distance between 17 and 22
yards to set the top sight pin.
As you move back another 4 to 6 yards,
set another pin, and as you move back 5
to 6 yards more from there, set a third.
Working with these three pins and
making slight adjustments will help you
sort out how high or low to hold with each
pin at different distances.
The number of pins you use is entirely
a personal decision. But I have found
the fewer pins the better, so long as I
can properly cover the ranges I expect
to shoot.

Almost every sight today uses lightgathering fiber optics that cause sight
pins to glow.
On some sights, the brightness of the
pin can be controlled with a hood, or an
optional rheostat that allows the user to
brighten or dim the pins.
Although it seems backward, a dimmer
pin works best in low light, because a
bright pin blurs your view of the target.
Remember, the pin's light does not
shine on the target. Rather, it's shining in
your eyes.
On many sights, you can select pin
diameter and color. Diameters normally
come in .010, .019 and .029 inches. While
target-shooters usually prefer smaller
pins, hunters will find the larger pins more
friendly in the woods.
Age also plays an important role.
As we get older, the fine pins tend
to disappear, especially in low-light
conditions. Some hunters believe larger
pins are less accurate, but I don't believe
that is true. For average whitetail shots -
30 yards and under - a .029 pin works well
under all light conditions. Remember, we
are shooting for the vitals on the deer, not
trying to shoot Xs in competition.
Pin color is a personal choice, but green
seems to be easiest to see followed by red,
yellow and white. When using multiple
pins, you can use color to identify the
range pins and minimize error.
LEVELS
Many sights today come with preinstalled levels that allow shooters to
detect canting and correct it.
A tilted bow will shoot right or left,
depending upon the cant and distance
shot. Shots in hunting situations are
seldom perfect; a slight tilt can lead to
