Metal fatigue and rust can become a
factor. Fastening and support straps also
can fray and fail over time.
Consider that old commercially
manufactured stand you bought back
in the 1980s or '90s: it likely hasn't
aged well. Worn or broken parts could
represent a threat to life and limb. Do
yourself a favor and invest in a new stand
with state-of-the-art safety features your
antique stand can't match.
Today's climbing, hang-on and ladder
stands all come with safety harnesses
and explicit instructions for stand assembly, placement and use.
Severe falls from tree stands virtually can be eliminated if hunters wear
full-body harnesses and make sure they
remained attached to the tree at all times
while hunting, climbing and descending.
Over the years, I've used ladder, hanging and climbing stands. Ladder stands,
especially those double-headers with
expanded platforms to seat two hunters,
are generally the sturdiest and safest.
I'd rate climbing stands second with the
understanding they shouldn't be used on
smooth- or loose-barked trees or in wet
or icy conditions.
Hanging stands tend to be the cheapest, most versatile and among the most
popular, but they also are the most problematic for a variety of reasons.
Hunters get in trouble with hang-ons
when ascending a tree without safety
restraints to hang their stand. It's always
best to use a spotter whenever hanging
stands.
For climbing up to hang-ons, I prefer
climbing sticks, which can be lashed
securely to the tree with straps and provide evenly spaced steps that are easily
ascended even in the pre-dawn darkness.
Individual screw-in or tie-on steps
can elevate the risk factor, particularly
if these steps are unevenly attached to
the tree at random intervals and alternate
with tree branches to facilitate climbing.
I once had a screw-in step break off
under my weight due to undetected metal
fatigue as I climbed to my stand one
morning, but a firm grip with both hands
on two other steps kept me up.
