Out of the Fog
HE WINTER ARCHERY and flintlock deer seasons hadn't been over
for even two weeks when someone at work mentioned they couldn't
wait until the next deer season.
The following day, I was in my ladder tree stand behind my house squirrel
hunting. It was one of those warm February mornings shrouded in a heavy
fog. You couldn't see more than 70 yards in any direction.
It was a slow morning squirrel-hunting wise, and I had seen only two on
a neighboring property that was off limits.
At 9 a.m., I caught a glimpse of movement in a thicket on the ridge about
60 yards away.
I mentally chastised myself for not having taken my binoculars, but because of the fog I didn't think they'd be useful.
Peering through the fog ahead of where I initially spotted the movement,
the form of a deer materialized in an area in the thicket not quite as dense.
It was a buck!
I always enjoy seeing deer, any deer, at any time, but no matter the season,
I always enjoy the sight of a buck.
This one had a tall, narrow rack, and I figured it was the 5-point that started
showing up on my trail camera the day after I killed my 8-point during the
prior archery season.
He immediately began making rubs and scrapes in earnest and I figured
somehow he knew the dominant buck was gone.
While I'd spotted him afterward and viewed trail-camera photos of him,
this was the first time I got a good look at him, and I marveled at his body size.
He was wary, just like a deer would be after surviving the gauntlet of fall
and winter seasons, plus avoiding autos on the roads in a suburban environment.
He stared in my direction, seemingly looking right through me, for what
seemed like a long time but in reality was probably no more than three or
four minutes. Then he carefully picked his way through the brush and downed
trees, crossed the stone wall near the upper stand where I'd killed the 8-point,
and disappeared in the fog.
I was sure glad he had made it through the deer seasons, and hoped he'd
be around, undoubtedly sporting bigger headgear, the next season.
Just like my co-worker, the image of that buck out of the fog had me
yearning for the next archery deer season.
