a large nest two autumns ago,
decided to add it to the display. The nest was built
near the top of a small,
straight sapling, and
resembled an elongated
football. Even though it
was less than 15 yards off
the old farm road, it was
difficult to get to as it was located
within a dense thicket of thorny devil's
club and recently logged treetops all
stitched together with blackberry canes.
After bulling through the nasty
tangles, I stopped to size up the nest,
which was just above eye level. The
weather had been warm, with extended
periods of rain. I poked the sapling
cautiously with my walking stick and
waited. There appeared to be no sign
of activity.
With my knife, I cut through the
sapling below the nest and just as it was
about to topple, a stream of aggressive
hornets rocketed out of the hole and
hit me full-force in the face, stinging,
knocking me flat like a punch from a
heavyweight. They pummeled me as I
crawled, clawing through the logging
debris and briars out to the road, where
they finally let up. The black-and-white
defenders had expertly driven off the
clumsy and foolish vandal.
Bald-faced hornets are not true
hornets, they're related to black-andyellow wasps. These hornets have
barbless stingers that allow them to
sting more than once; their secondary
defensive capability is squirting or
spraying venom from their stingers into
the eyes of invading raccoons, skunks,
foxes and bears, causing blurred vision
and temporary blindness.
I recovered the nest several weeks
later after a hard freeze and hung it in
APRIL 2020	

the studio. It's a nice addition, but what
it brought to mind - aside from the
painful encounter - is how similar the
nest is to the old, weathered gray barn
just down the lane from the sapling.
Now abandoned, the picturesque barn,
like the nest, once was an active center
of industry and country living in this
upland setting.

CAST THE RUNES
Just as the antlers of one buck can
become entangled and locked up with
those of his opponent, much of my
career has been tied inextricably to the
magic of deer antlers.
I've written about them at length,
illustrated them, rendered their graceful
forms in paintings and spent a lifetime
as a deer hunter looking for them atop
the head of a buck. After all these years,
I still regard antlers with that same
fascination shared by hunters since
earliest times.
While working on the museum
project, part of which would feature
an enormous collection of record-book
whitetails, the walls of my Midwest
design studio were hung with many
of America's most renowned whitetail
heads. Even though they certainly were
impressive, what I found to be just as
noteworthy were the incredible stories
behind each. In that respect, an old
faded mount of a small 6-pointer may
