every other row, looking for a bone amid
the stubble.
Others areas to focus upon include
trails leading to fields from cover, or
places where a combine unloaded its bin,
leaving an accumulation of grain on the
ground.
THRILL OF THE HUNT
While hunting for shed antlers is an
enjoyable way to spend time outdoors and
stave off cabin fever, it's also a great way
to scout for the upcoming season.
Shed antlers can reveal clues on travel
routes, bedding areas and the possible
home range of a buck.
Last year, I found my second matching
set of sheds - a nice 8-point rack - in the
depths of a hollow. The antlers were about
10 yards apart in a small, grassy opening
surrounded by briars.
The year prior I found a smaller antler
in the same spot, and I suspected a buck
was using the hollow as a bedding area.
In the fall, I placed several trail cameras
around the location and routinely captured
photos of large buck with long, sym-

metrical tines, similar in composition to
the matched set of sheds I found months
earlier.
Unfortunately, this particular buck
never materialized in my scope this past
season, but it left me anxious to make a
return trip to the hollow to see if it left
another set of antlers behind this year.
Still, while finding a large, matched
set is the ultimate trophy for anyone who
searches for shed antlers, it isn't necessarily the rarest of all finds.
While a monster buck is considered
a rare trophy during hunting season, the
opposite is true when it comes to shed antlers. The smaller the antler, the harder it is
to find on the forest floor. That's why my
collection is full of three and four-point
antlers, but very few two-point sides and
I have yet to find a spike.
That doesn't mean that finding a large
antler isn't a thrill.
It's actually more than that.
To me, finding a shed antler, especially
if it's an area where I hunt, is just as exciting as actually harvesting the buck that
carried it.
