He was followed by John James Audubon, John Cassin and Spenser F. Baird.
Influential naturalists such as Witmer
Stone, Samuel N. Rhoads and Benjamin
H. Warren followed as the 20th century
unfolded. All would make an impact
studying and inventorying Pennsylvania's
and America's wildlife communities.
The Academy gave these naturalists
reason to headquarter near Philadelphia.
It, as well as New York City, were America's melting pots for gifted ornithologists
and zoologists to compare their observations and make their collections more
readily available.
Cassin, a Philadelphian, spent 26
years with the Academy and is credited
with advancing the institution of ornithology beyond the work of Wilson and
Audubon. That he described 193 new
bird species in the world and worked to
define shared characteristics and behaviors among birds, further connecting the
"feathered tribes" Wilson wrote about in
his masterwork, American Ornithology,
truly exemplifies his talents and impact

on ornithology.
In many ways, Cassin rose to and
maybe even exceeded the descriptive standards of Wilson and Audubon because he
was much more than a naturalist, although
an artist he wasn't. He took a stronger
scientific focus afield and came back
with a deeper understanding of the birds
he studied. His grasp of ornithology was
monumental.
Cassin died at the age of 56 in 1869,
an end he alluded to having seen coming,
because of his use of arsenic in preserving
bird specimens. But not before he served
the Union in the Civil War and spent time
in a Confederate prison camp.
In the 1800s, wildlife inventory and
natural history interpretations were
accomplished through generous observation and collection of the animal being
studied. Having an animal to examine
- dead or alive - helped these men learn
about species' physical characteristics and
food preferences. It's why early ornithologists shot and collected songbirds. But
