HE TWO HUNTERS crept up
behind the huge chestnut blowdown,
steadied their longrifles and pulled back
the hammers.
Two bucks with velvet-covered racks
were feeding on abundant browse in a
small clearing within the otherwise-dense
forest.
"You take that little buck on the right,
Dan'l, and I'll shoot the one on the left,"
his friend Clint instructed.
Sparks from flints striking steel ignited
powder and sent two roundballs downrange. One buck fell; the other stumbled,
then regained its footing and slipped off.
"Figures your old 'Ticklicker' dropped
your buck in its tracks and mine ran off,"
Clint quipped, as he knew Daniel could
outshoot just about anyone.
Two days before he'd witnessed Dan
"bark" three squirrels in a row. Dan could
place his heavy lead ball just above the
head of a squirrel on the trunk of a tree and
the concussion would dispatch it quickly.
"No wasted meat," Dan would say.
Fresh meat was in high demand, as the
frontier wagon drivers on the expedition
didn't fare well on the British army's
small rations of flour and dried salted beef.
"Let's find your deer and load both
on the horses and git going," Daniel said.
"Just yesterday, a wagon driver who wandered off the trail gathering firewood lost
his scalp for his trouble."
Daniel and Clint had signed on to
drive supply wagons for the expedition
commanded by British Gen. Edward
Braddock that left Fort Cumberland in
Maryland in late May 1755.
The two young frontiersmen from
eastern Pennsylvania, about 50 miles
northwest of Philadelphia, never had been
this far west in the wilderness of Penn's
Woods, but they'd heard stories from
trappers about plentiful beavers and game.
They also were aware that it was territory roamed by warriors belonging to the
Ottawa, Huron and Shawnee tribes.
In 1754, the British and French were
in competition to control the Ohio River
Valley. The French established forts
in what is now western Pennsylvania,
including Fort Duquesne at the confluence
