The Pennsylvania Board of Game Commissioners back in
May 1924 was seriously considering the release of mule
deer in the Commonwealth. Its thinking followed a similar
path that brought elk here from Yellowstone National Park:
purchase muleys that were overpopulating northern Arizona's Kaibab National Forest. The muleys, with an estimated population
of 100,000, had exceeded their habitat's carrying capacity and ruined their
Kaibab Plateau range as a result of President Theodore Roosevelt's 1906
protection of the "finest deer herd in America." In the fall of 1924, the
hunting of Kaibab mule deer resumed, but much too late. At that same
time, the game commissioners had instructed agency Executive Secretary
Seth Gordon to buy 100 young Kaibab mule deer, in the proportion of
one male to four females, if possible. They'd be stocked in Cameron
and Potter counties. In July 1925, the Game Commission ordered 100
mule deer at $35 each from the Kaibab National Forest. But through the
winter of '25, an estimated 40,000 muleys died of malnutrition on the
plateau. The die-off rattled the board, which decided in September 1926
to reduce its order from 100 mule deer to 50. But in January 1927, with
thousands of deer continuing to die on the plateau, the board abandoned
its Kaibab plan and shelved other considerations to try rearing mule-deer
fawns in captivity. The topic was never again considered, according to
board meeting minutes.
