I
My Pond
BELIEVE it was in high school, or maybe college, that reading Henry David
Thoreau's 1854 classic Walden was mandatory for English class. The book
was about the author's two-year isolation in a cabin by a pond near Concord,
Mass. Thoreau wrote about theology and his reflection upon simple living in
natural surroundings. Walden's pond became his focus in time of isolation.
I, too, managed to find solitude and reflection from a nearby pond in time of
isolation.
In picking out a new home, we had selected the site across the road from a pond
because we knew it would prevent future houses from being built there. When we
moved in December, I instantly appreciated the choice, especially since ducks
and geese were using the pond regularly. At the time, though, I didn't realize just
what a comfort the pond would bring in troubled times.
In mid-March, because of the COVID-19 outbreak, I, along with many Game
Commission employees with the ability to telework, began working from home.
Game News didn't miss a beat, although there were challenges in getting the
magazine completed and out to subscribers through a different process.
I had to adjust to a lonelier work environment, though. My wife Debbie is a
health-care worker, so she was off to work nearly every day. But my daily routine
kept me busy. As I got my laptop computer up and running each morning, I was
glad I'd incorporated a dandy, functional office into the new house. Keeping up
with the many emails; writing, editing and proofing articles; corresponding with
artists and writers to coordinate assignments, there always was plenty to do.
Each day at some point during mid-morning, I'd break, leave my office, and
look out our large front window at the pond and 30-acre overgrown field with
patches of woods beyond. In late March, the many dogwood trees lining the
back side of the pond and surrounding fields exploded in brilliant white color.
It became a bright spot and respite from my work and the apprehension caused
by the pandemic.
One sunny morning, while watching six deer in the field beyond the pond, I
spotted a kingfisher sitting on a waterfowl nesting structure pole. Near the water's
edge, a great blue heron was still as a statue, looking for prey. Next, two honking
Canada geese set their wings and landed, then a flock of six or seven mallards
splashed down. I had five species of wildlife in view at the same time.
A quote from Thoreau's Walden came to mind: "All good things are wild and
free."
More meaningful words, especially in difficult times, were never spoken.
