satisfaction between 8 and 10 on a scale of 1 to 10.
MISCONCEPTIONS
For as significant - and record-breaking - as elk applicant numbers were last year, Banfield believes more hunters would apply if
they had a better understanding of what Pennsylvania elk hunting
is and how applicants are selected.
The main reason hunters avoid the elk-license drawing is the
odds of being selected. But each year you apply, Banfield noted,
you have a better chance.
If you're not drawn, you receive a bonus point in each license
category for which you've applied. Each bonus point will give you
an additional chance in subsequent drawings. But Banfield said
hunters with no bonus points are selected every year, too.
"If you're pulled for a Pennsylvania elk hunt, you'll hunt in your
state, and your license will be a lot cheaper, as will your travel
expenses," Banfield said. "You can even take your elk
home to your local butcher shop and taxidermist."
Another reason hunters don't apply for the elk
hunt is because they believe Pennsylvania elk are habituated to
people; that there's no challenge hunting them.
"There's no denying the elk on Winslow Hill are habituated,
because they see 400,000 people a year," Banfield explained. "But
the farther you go from Benezette, the less habituation you see.
"There are portions of the elk management area where elk will
disappear as soon as a vehicle approaches. These elk are rarely
seen."
So, Banfield reasoned, consider what Pennsylvania really offers.
No hunt is an automatic success story. There are plenty of challenges
brought on by the weather, elk elusiveness and private property.
"Often, a hunt is what you make of it and what nature throws at
you," noted Banfield. "There's no doubt some elk are easier to drop
than others. But don't believe for a second they're all that way!"
RESOURCE MATTERS
Pennsylvania's elk herd has a good age structure. The average
age of cows is about 5 years, while bulls are about 6 years. The
most productive birthing years from cows are between the ages of
3 and 12, Banfield said. So, having an average cow age of 5 years
puts a lot of females in the prime-time window for calf production.
"They are reproducing and contributing to the population annually," Banfield noted.
