the rifle range and checked the zero after
the miss. My jaw dropped when I saw I
was shooting 4 inches low. I had no idea
why it was off so much.
But the miss set the stage for me
to enjoy some more time afield in late
archery season.

EMPERATURES WERE in the 40s
when the buck and doe appeared
around 5:20 p.m. on Monday, Jan. 13.
They'd emerged behind me, and I
scarcely was breathing as I peered over
my left shoulder, watching the buck as it
fed on acorns.
The doe walked toward my stand - the
same stand that hosted so much action and
so many harvests all season long. She was
nearly beneath it when I heard her snort.
The buck's head snapped up.
His eyes were pointed at me, but I
was mostly obscured by the tree's trunk.
Still, he knew something wasn't right. He
continued staring up at me, then started
moving to my right. He went about 10

yards before stopping, about 25 yards
away, still staring intently at the object
in the tree.
I wanted to stand to shoot, but knew I
couldn't without spooking him. I'd have
to take the shot while seated. I pulled back
the recurve's string and concentrated on
the buck's vitals, then cut loose an arrow.
The buck bolted as if shot out of a cannon,
running full speed along the woods line,
then delving into the swamp.
Knowing it would be dark soon, I
climbed down from my stand to check
for a hit. I found my homemade western
larch arrow, partially buried in the leaves
where the deer had been standing, but
only the back half was there. The front
half, tipped with a Zwickey Eskimo twobladed broadhead, was missing. The buck
must have snapped the back half off as he
turned to run.
It was nearly dark and I decided to back
out and look for the buck in the morning
rather than risk pushing him.
Darkness enveloped a starless sky as I
