lies down. I'd hit him after all.
I want to rush up and finish him, but
Brian cautions me to stay put, and stay
ready. In the moments to follow, I watch
as the bull slowly lays down his head, and
an antler tips upward toward the sky.
Brian and I ease forward, where I circle
the downed bull and touch him with the
tip of my gun barrel. He doesn't move.
MAGIC MOMENTS
Too choked up to speak and knees
now shaking, I stand there for a good
while, soaking in the sight of this majestic
animal: Thankful for this opportunity.
Thankful for this blessing in my life.
Thankful for that primeval hunter trait.
Thankful for my talented and knowledgeable guide.
Nothing compares to this moment.
Not the two 10-point bucks I'd taken
previously in Pennsylvania or the three
Keystone State bears I'd harvested, or the
Triple Trophy I once completed.
Brian counts the points - 16 of them,
an 8-by-8. At the check station later in the
day, the immense bull's live weight would

be estimated at 754 pounds.
Getting the bull out will be a process.
We are now 3.6 miles from our vehicle,
though it's mostly downhill and the outfitter is sending in an 1,800-pound Percheron draft horse to pull the elk out on a sled.
The gigantic horse absolutely dwarfs the
hulking bull, which takes three of us to
work onto the sled, its 50-inch-wide rack
hanging out over the side.
Brian volunteers to walk alongside the
sled and hold up the right antler so the rack
doesn't drag, which could broom off some
color and the ivory-colored tips. The horse
begins its haul and is soon out of sight,
while I follow at a much-slower pace. It
takes me several hours to reach the main
road, and the bull is loaded on Brian's
pickup when I get there, exhausted, but
incredibly happy.
At the check station, I accept handshakes and questions from the crowd.
Which zone did the elk come from?
How much does it weigh? Did I have a
guide and from which outfitter?
One woman asks if I'm happy getting
a bull this size. I don't answer, only smile
wide and nod my head, getting a good
laugh from the group.
As I'm waiting, someone steps out
of the crowd, and before I can recognize
him, gives me a big hug and handshake.
It's my cousin Phil, who first called me
with the news I'd been drawn for a tag,
and who helped me to scout back in October. He and his wife had been staying at
their camp in Clinton County and swung
by the check station on their way home.
Their being there just as I checked my elk
wouldn't be the last coincidence to occur.
After more handshakes and a quick
shower back at the lodge, I head for the
dining room, where crockpots of soup and
chili are set out for mid-afternoon tiding
over. I hadn't eaten since 4 a.m., and it's
