Around 9 o'clock, we decided to
hunt.
Jim and I headed out together and
split up after half a mile. I hiked out
on the first point and he continued
down the ridge. Jim planned to call
for an hour or so, then join me. But
more than hour after I'd set up, he
hadn't come.
I knew something was up, so I
kept hunting, moving to another spot,
where I found hen tracks and followed
them. No gobbler tracks joined them.
And after setting up and calling, no
gobblers responded.
By 11 o'clock, Jim still hadn't
showed. But knowing him, I figured
he'd just kept going, and that's just what
he did.
Despite the wind and snow, Jim continued easing along the ridge, calling every
150 yards or so. About 11 a.m. he reached
a saddle in the valley and set up. Without
much hope, he gave a last attempt at calling
before turning around and heading back.
And to his surprise, a bird gobbled back
from just over the hill.
Unfortunately, a fallen treetop 25 yards
in front of Jim blocked his view in the
bird's direction. Not wanting to call with
the gobbler already so close, he waited
for several minutes, but the bird remained
silent. When he called softly, the bird
answered immediately, this time closer.
Once more, the waiting game ensued, but
again there was only silence. Jim called a
third time, and this time the tom answered
- so close Jim couldn't believe it wasn't
in sight.
Remaining absolutely still, eyes scanning the area in front of him, a red-andwhite head suddenly popped up in the
center of the treetop. The crafty gobbler
20
seemed to be using it as cover.
Jim only needed to move his shotgun's
barrel a few inches to the right, but the
gobbler caught the slight movement, putted
and ducked.
Instinctively, Jim cutt and yelped to hide
the alarm putt, disgusted he'd spooked the
bird. Then, unbelievably, gobbles sounded
from multiple birds!
Four gobblers appeared from behind
the treetop, red heads brilliant in the sun,
40 yards off, but angling away. It was now
or never. The last tom stopped, unaware of
danger, and Jim confirmed a beard, aligned
his red-dot sight and fired.
The big gobbler collapsed and when Jim
leaped to his feet and reached it, he was
thrilled with its 10-inch beard and ¾-inch
spurs. He figured it to be a 2-year-old and,
back at camp, it weighed-in at 22 pounds.
Despite wind, cold temperatures, discouragement and 3 inches of snow, Jim
stuck it out and was rewarded with his
gobbler.
Expect the unexpected when hunting
spring turkeys.
