powered motorized cars replaced the
mules. With the exception of Kelpie, the
mules were sold to Amish farmers. Fiddy
bought Kelpie and her tack, a wagon and
a cart at a greatly discounted price.
Then the Scot retired and headed
upstate to live with his pet mule. Above
all, Fiddy loved to hunt, and he was
excited at the opportunities to stalk deer
and other game in the highlands of Penn's
Woods.
A
MONG THE BRICKYARD
workers were a group of eight hunters who followed in the footsteps of their
fathers and grandfathers and hunted deer
in Pennsylvania's northern tier. Many
years before, hunters traveled north by
train, packing wall tents, stoves and skids
of supplies to last through the entire bear
and deer seasons. The construction of
new roads, better vehicles and burgeoning
wildlife populations sparked a growth in
the construction of permanent hunting
camps, and when the brickyard gang came
across a golden opportunity to buy 120
acres adjacent to public land, they drew
up plans to build their own.
An enterprising and well-connected
group, they bargained and scrounged
for building materials and, within a few
months, had laid aside a great store of
flawed bricks, lumber and timbers. They

also salvaged
the windows,
doors and cabinetry from the old
mining office, which
was being demolished.
All of it was hauled north by
rail, then trucked to the site.
The ninth camp member was none
other than Fiddy himself, who was already
busy on site. He took the reins in directing
the camp's construction. Kelpie provided
the brawn for numerous heavy-duty tasks,
and quickly became the camp mascot.
The mule took to life in the north
country with gusto. She was bred for hard
labor, and labor she did; pulling stumps,
dragging logs, carting loads of stone,
gravel and bricks. Fiddy relished watching
her work, the sun hot on her back under
blue skies, birds singing, the wind in the
trees, the vaulting silhouettes of the misty
mountains beyond.
Upon its completion in late summer,
there was no other camp like it. The
brick appointments combined with
the rustic design was not only
functional, but distinct. To finish
it off, they also built a barbecue pit
and patio, a butchering shed with a
smokehouse, and lastly, a roomy stable
for Kelpie.
UNTING SEASON WAS SOON
upon them, and the men hunted
turkeys and grouse in the hills and small
game in the valley's farms. Fiddy, though,
had his sights set on bigger game. Over
the years he had taken deer, but now it was
a bear he desired, ever since he had seen
big bear tracks on the skid roads while the
camp was under construction.
