Not to be deterred, we began our hike up a
ridge, when a thunderous gobble erupted
from the ridgetop.
After waiting to hear one more gobble
to get a better fix on the bird's location, we
started clearing away the leaves from the
base of a big tree, and had just finished,
when Chase whispered, " Pap, I see him. "
The big bird appeared to be on a direct
path toward where we'd parked the truck,
a half-hour earlier. Having not yet made a
call, and knowing that the gobbler hadn't
seen us, we waited for him to continue into
a deep ravine.
We looped around, stopping on the other
side of the ravine, and set up to call. But after
calling sporadically over the next 45 minutes, it was clear the gobbler had gone silent.
At 8:30, we were hiking through the
middle of an open field on the other side
of the ravine to check out another spot
when, just over the bank,
not more than
150 yards
from where
the other gobbler had disappeared earlier, a
bird gobbled.

of a woodlot and settled in behind a downed
oak tree. We put on our camo gloves and
facemasks and I began to call. The gobbler
hammered back, and sounded to be coming
in. With hearts pounding, Chase whispered,
" Pap, there he is! "
The big gobbler was 70 yards out and
closing. He periodically slowed down to
strut, putting on a real show.
I handed Chase the Remington 1100
semiauto and instructed to let the bird get a
little closer before placing the shotgun bead
at the base of the turkey's neck and squeezing the trigger when I told him.
When the bird got well within range and
stopped to look for the " hen, " I whispered
to Chase to take the shot. The bird dropped
and I took the gun as we headed to his prize
- a 23-pound gobbler with a 10-inch beard.
The Game Commission hit a home run
with the Mentored Hunting Program. Chase
is among the thousands and thousands of
hunters who, through the program, got their
start at a young age, and now appear to be
hooked for life.
As my grandson's primary hunting
mentor, I've had numerous friends tell me
that their children and grandchildren just
don't have the patience or can't seem to
get interested in hunting. But as I tell them,
squirrel hunting is a great way to start kids
off. It provides countless opportunities in
nice weather, especially with the new September opening, as well as close shots -
all of which help to foster interest.
Chase's mother and I often remind
him that we couldn't hunt until age 12,
and how fortunate he already has been
to harvest a buck, a doe, a spring gobbler,
and numerous squirrels he enjoys hunting
so much. He's appreciative, but recently
asked, " Pap, how old do I have to be to
hunt bears? "
