Jacob Dingel State Game Lands 218 originally was developed as a waterfowl management area. A series of impoundments were built, flooding several hundred acres of the property to create wetlands. And duck hunting and goose hunting at the game lands remain good. Recently, however, habitat-management practices at the game lands have shifted toward warm-season grasses and young forest due to structural issues with the primary dam. The transition has turned the tract into a popular pheasant-hunting destination. From spraying herbicide to kill invasive plant species and enable natives to flourish, to controlled burns to rejuvenate grass fields, managers have adjusted their techniques continually to create ideal and diverse habitat.
