used can weigh no more than 17 pounds.
On Sunday's " heavy gun " day, there is no
weight limit, and 36 pounds is not out of
the ordinary.
Back in the mid-1980s, one of my
technicians, Tony Smeltzer, of Elizabethtown, competed at the club, and I
joined him several times as an observer.
Although there have been improvements
to the firing line and surrounding areas
since, the biggest improvements are in
" the pit " - the area where the targets are
hung, five-eighths of a mile downrange.
Speakers in the pit transmit announcements from the firing line, letting pit
workers know when to check and replace
targets.
In the pit, when a shot is fired, you first
hear a crack as the bullet punches a hole
in the target overhead. That's followed by
a faint boom a second or two later.
During sighting practice, the pit worker
at a particular target will lower the target
when all is clear after the shot. A black
disc is placed over a hole in the target's
white area, and a white disc is used to
cover a hole in the target's colored center.
The target then is raised back up so the
shooter can see what scope adjustments
are needed.
While sighting, shooters have six minutes to fire as many shots as they wish. The
score targets then are raised and shooting
for score begins, with shooters given 10
minutes to fire 10 shots in the heavy gun
class; and 15 minutes in the light gun
class. The score targets stay up for the
duration of the period, then are lowered
and scored when shooting concludes.
While the idea of a bullet striking
a target overhead might sound unsafe,
the pit is fully underground and the wall
facing the firing line is made of concrete
that's at least a foot thick.

Additionally, a concrete roof extends
over the area where the pit workers
stand. They have their backs to the firing
line, protected by a concrete wall, and a
concrete roof above them as they look up
at the targets.
Safety is a prime objective at the club,
and its members do a fine job of ensuring it.
LONG-RANGE GEAR
Many heavy-gun shooters have specially designed wagons in which they
wheel their rifles around on the grounds.
The stocks on these guns are huge
with flat, parallel areas on the bottom of
the forend and buttstock, with metal rails
