lengthwise with a hole about the diameter of the barrel, then it's cut in half
lengthwise.
The bottom half is bedded into the
stock, and the barreled action is set
within it, its receiver against the rear of
the block. Then the top half is bolted to
the bottom half.
Back when Tony shot at the club, the
hot cartridges were big magnum cases
necked down to hold heavy 30-caliber
(.308) or 7mm (.284) bullets.
It's very different these days.
The popular cartridges are targetspecific wildcat 6mm (.243), unless the
air is moving a lot, at which point the
go-to cartridge is the .300 Winchester
Short Magnum, which produced the best
group ever shot at the club.
That honor belongs to Matt Kline of
Selinsgrove, who on Sept. 12, 2010 shot a
2.815-inch, 10-shot group with a score of
100-4X. All 10 shots were in the 10-ring
with four in the very center X-ring of
the target.
And here's the really special part: it's
not only the best group ever shot at the
club, or even nationwide - it's the world
record.
Can you imagine putting 10 shots
into less than 3 inches at five-eighths of
a mile?
Consider this: A rifle zeroed at 100
yards requires an elevation adjustment

of about 40 feet just to strike paper at
1,000 yards.

Competitions conclude with the best
seven shooters by group size and the
best seven by score shooting off for top
honors. At the club's typical shoots, the
light-gun class draws 100 to 120 shooters, while the heavy-gun class usually
has 80 to 100 entries. Of course, many
events - including the main attraction of
the year, the annual World Open - had to
be canceled in 2020 due to the pandemic.

In typical years, the club holds a shooting school at which newcomers can learn
the ropes of shooting at long range - an
introduction that might lead some to
compete. And to give you some idea of
the magnitude of the World Open, when
my wife, Betty, and I attended in 2018,
the prizes exceeded $60,000 in value!
Club President Eric Wolfgang told me
those who started the club were pioneers
in the sport, and those who shoot there
today continue that tradition. And, interestingly, but not surprisingly, advances
in long-range shooting technology often
trace their origins to this very club.
It is a true Pennsylvania original.
