without so much as a cluck.
The second reason a bird might
quickly lose interest is because he's
with several hens, and he's not interested in a lone female. Sometimes,
though, the hens can be called in and
the tom will follow.
The third possibility is the tom is
not interested in mating, and gobbling
is his way of communicating with
another tom. In this case, he might or
might not come to a call, furthering his
legendary status.
The Sugar Shack Charlatan lived on
the farm I hunted. The landowner was
a friend who supplemented his income
every spring tapping his maple trees. He
processed the raw sap in a sugar shack
he built in the woods, and later sold the
finished syrup.

It was late May and sugaring was
done for the year. A friend and I were
taking turns hunting the property
and, twice in previous weeks, he had
encountered a big tom near the sugar
shack, but couldn't pull him into gun
range. The bird was named, and a
legend was born.
I hunted a different property on
the last day of that season, and early
morning was dead quiet. I considered
packing things in, then figured I had one
more card to play - driving 3 miles to
hunt the Sugar Shack Charlatan since
my friend wouldn't be there.
Time was running out, but I was
eager to take one more crack at the bird
that so far proved to be smarter than
either of us.
With 90 minutes left in the season,
I quietly walked the woodland road to
the sugar shack. Crossing a wet area, I
stopped dead. There, in the mud, was
a large, fresh gobbler track.
Could the Charlatan be somewhere
nearby?
The property's large maple and
beech trees made it easy to watch for
trouble and I cautiously made my way
along the dirt road until I reached the
sugar shack. Then I sat with my back
against a large beech, and called to see
if the Charlatan was still around.
I began with several clucks followed
by a few soft yelps and got an immediate response. The bird was out about 75
yards and my setup was perfect.
" So, the Charlatan still lives, " I
thought.
Now, it was my turn to try to outfox
this shrewd bird.
Sitting there waiting for another
response, I planned my strategy. For
some reason, the words of Ben Lee
popped into my head.
