Creating young forest also was the aim of a 2018
project on the game lands, and the lush food and
cover provided by young white oaks is evident a year
later, in the photo at left, taken near the Ellendale
Parking Area in Stony Valley. Groups of overstory oaks
were retained to provide mast and increase the amount
of edge habitat created. While many wildlife species,
including deer, benefit from young forest, this project was
designed specifically to help ruffed grouse. Male grouse
generally prefer forest stands aged 5 to 17 years, which
affords them cover to evade predators when drumming
to broadcast their location during mating season.
Mature yellow poplar trees girdled as part of the project
eventually will provide logs on which grouse can drum.

Nile virus, the ridgetop game lands
in southeastern Pennsylvania present a
unique opportunity to protect grouse
on the receding edge of their range by
providing them better habitat. This helps
ensure their range won't rapidly retract.
On the eastern end of State Game Lands
211, an ongoing project regularly uses
cuttings and controlled burns to maintain
young forest in previously timbered areas.
Controlled burns are a favored habitatmanagement tool on the game lands. In the
past five years, more than 4,600 acres of forest
were treated with fire on State Game Lands
211. Helicopters even have been used to ignite
large forest tracts from the air. Controlled
burns also are used in tandem with timbering,
and in the last five years, more than 1,000
acres of the game lands have been timbered.
Controlled burns also have been conducted on
some of the fields on the game lands.
