That Was A
You Never Know When Someone
Stepping up to the tom, I couldn't believe
what had just happened! If you had told me
three years ago, one year ago, or even eight
months ago that I would be standing over a
turkey shot by my 10-year-old daughter Leah,
I would have laughed at you.
Yet, there I was, legs shaking with excitement, huge smile on my face, looking back
at Leah whose smile was even bigger. It's a
moment I'll never forget.
Leah had never shown any interest in hunting, or even tagging along on a hunt. Then one
day last fall, out of left field, she told me, " I
could shoot a turkey. "
My jaw dropped! I didn't press the issue. I
just told her maybe we could go out together
in the spring.
Every so often, when turkey hunting came
up, because we saw a turkey or I was watching
a hunting show, I'd ask her about it to see if
she was still interested, and every time she
told me yes.
But I expected her to be ready when she
was older. Not 10!
As the spring turkey season edged closer,
I talked to a few friends about borrowing
a 20-gauge shotgun for her. I only had a
12-gauge. I wanted to make sure practicing
wouldn't bring a sore shoulder that would
turn her off. I couldn't get my hands on what
I thought was the perfect gun, but I remembered my dad had an old, single-shot .410. I
did some research on the .410 as a turkey gun,
and was encouraged with what I read. With
the new Federal TSS load, it seemed a viable
option. I decided to give it a shot.
As we got closer to opening day, I had a
tough time finding target loads, let alone those
TSS loads everyone liked. Ammunition was
limited due to the Coronavirus shutdown.
Eventually, I found a local sporting goods
store with curbside pickup that had the TSS
load. Then I got a box of target loads from a
friend, keeping 6 feet away, of course. Leah
and I were ready to give it a try.
Furloughed from my job, I had time for
target practice with Leah. Since she'd never
shot a firearm before, I had to start from the
beginning: gun safety. With a little encouragement she pulled her first trigger, and with the
big target I set out, she connected!
We practiced a few more times to adjust
her aim, which was a little high. Then I
ordered her mentored youth permit, which
arrived about a week later. We officially were
ready to go.
