I looked at the scrolling on the
hinged floor plate and the diamond
cut checkering on the honey-blond
Monte Carlo walnut stock. The palmswell pistol grip cap, with the Forester
tree wood inlay and forend tip. I was
enthralled by the rifle.
Remembering my uncle's words,
" buy the best rifle you can buy, you
won't be sorry, because you will use it
for years on end, " I did just that.
It wasn't long before I was at the
rifle range, dialing in the Leupold to hit
an inch high at 100-yards. With holes
from three shots touching one another,
I packed up and waited for deer season.
amazed, shocked and bewildered.
My friend and I headed to the closest shooting range to find that, while
he saw a clear picture of the target
and shot dead on with the rifle, when I
looked through the scope, the crosshairs
appeared doubled and my shots were
scattered.
The progressive lenses in my glasses
were the culprit. They were recommended to help me see clearly at multiple distances, but they blurred the view
through my scope. Bifocals eliminated
those blurred lines and I began wearing
them when I hunt.

ONSIDERING I'D BEEN
schooled on Jack O'Connor's
writings, I'd thought about getting a
.270 like he'd carried for years on end.
But he also opened his book, The
Hunting Rifle, by stating, " No man's
opinion is any better than his background, his experience and his general
common sense. "
When deer season arrived, I took my
first deer with it - a doe. I was working
through a tangle of grapevines when
she stood up and looked right at me,
then collapsed on the spot.
That gave me the boost of confidence
I needed. The rifle soon fit me like a
glove. One year, I took a buck and three
does with it. All of them fell in their
tracks, but I never took an " iffy " shot;
I waited for the deer to turn broadside,
or I passed.
Then when everything seemed just
fine, I missed a doe at 50 yards. I was

carry .30-30s, which have accounted
for more deer harvests than any other
rifle. But there's little doubt the .270,
.30-06 and .308 are more popular in
Pennsylvania's deer woods. They're all
accurate up to 300 yards and, in Pennsylvania, most shots come at 100 yards
or less - maybe even 50 yards or less.
Now more than 50 years old, my
.308 has served me well. It's suffered
many bumps and bruises along the way,
but it's never let me down.
Two seasons ago, I took a mediumsized 5-point on Wednesday of the
second week of firearms season. The
buck dropped in his tracks. My wife,
Karen, claimed it was the best venison
she'd ever eaten.
This past season, as I toughed it out
on the last day, unable to find a deer, I
still smiled when I picked up my rifle,
looking forward to the next time I could
do it again. There is something special
about a rifle that fits like a glove.
