ground while the two oblivious young
deer continued to feed not 15 yards in
front of my stand. No problem. The rest
of the deer would make their way over
soon enough. The youngsters would
soon make them feel it was safe to step
out.
I was back in the driver's seat. This
was a good plan. I enjoyed the anticipation while admiring my intelligence.
That's when I again heard hoofbeats
in the woods; somewhere behind me.
Heavy, familiar hoofbeats.
I couldn't be certain, but it sure
sounded just like Mr. Big. He either
noticed those does, or maybe thought
my grunting and rattling really was a
fight after all.
Regardless, he did what old bucks do,
and circled around from a known safe
direction for a hard look.
If I made any sort of movement
without knowing which way he was
facing, I would probably spook him and
the approaching does. So, the question
became: If a doe stepped into range
first, should I shoot or wait to see if she
would draw Mr. Big out in front of me?
As it turned out, I didn't have to
worry about it. With all those eyes and
noses at such close quarters, it was only
a matter of time before the inevitable
happened.
I raised my head a quarter-inch to
peak over the scope at a moving deer.
And a loud, high-pressure snort came
from behind me.
As a mediocre hunter, I am well
versed in spooking deer. One season,
I spooked about 20 on the way to my
stand. My wife said if I were Lenape
instead of Irish, my name would have

It has been my experience that when
a doe sees or smells a hunter, she will
do her alarm snort several times before
fleeing.
I think this has to do with the selfless
nature of matriarchal does, in general,
that they would be willing to face
danger just to alert their offspring of a
lurking predator.
Conversely, I have observed spooked
bucks that only let out one reflexive
snort before taking off.
It was the latter sound that I had just
heard, and I couldn't resist temptation
any longer - I had to know who was
back there.
I whipped around 180 degrees just in
time to catch a glimpse of an enormous
whitetail rear-end disappearing in the
woods.
I can never be sure, but given the
buck's size, if it wasn't Mr. Big - it was
his brother, Mr. Bigger.
I snapped my head back around just
in time to see a stampede of panicked
antlerless deer fleeing over a rise and
out of sight.
I thought about how I'd educated just
about every deer in the neighborhood,
including at least one giant buck.
Anger flashed, but immediately
turned into stoicism. Decades of being
a Philadelphia sports fan had made me
capable of absorbing defeat better than
most men.
Once back on the ground, I finally
managed a short volley of laughter
before walking the trail of chicken
feathers back to the house.
