me I heard a single gobble off to my right,
but it was almost out of earshot.
When the gobbler I'd been working
finally came into sight, cautiously walking behind a feeding hen, my attention
focused sharply on those two birds, and I
continued to watch them. Then I caught
slight movement to my right. It was the
other gobbler, fully fanned and not more
than 10 yards from me.
I sat stone-still while the bird walked
behind me and then to my left, where I
shot him at about 8 yards. He had come
that distance and had pinpointed the single
call I had made. He also weighed in at 23
pounds and carried 1-inch spurs. Not too
bad for a last-week gobbler!

and like this one, they tend to do their
investigating quietly.
BACHELOR GROUPS
You might get as much of a response
using gobbler calls as hen calls in the
late season. With the birds wrapping up
breeding, they start to reform their bachelor groups.
I've heard late-season gobblers calling
to one another - ignoring my calls. When
they closed ranks, they went silent.
It took me some time to sort out what
was going on, but once I knew for sure, I
used it to my advantage.
I live in an area flanked by fields on
three sides. One year, during the last week
of the spring season, I spotted a gobbler
and hen across from my house, an hour
before sunset. There wasn't enough time
to get on the birds before dark, so I made a
plan to move in the next morning. It rained
lightly after dark and, the next morning, I
awoke to a sea of fog.
From previous experience, I had a
fairly good idea where they'd roost and
decided to set up close to that spot along a
field edge. When daylight came, the gobbler sounded off not more than 70 yards
away, and then another gobbler shouted
from the ridge behind my house.
The next time I heard the bird nearest me, he was in the field gobbling and
heading toward the ridge gobbler. But I
couldn't see him in the fog. I decided to
make a move to get around the birds.
What happened next, well, you had to
be there to see and believe it. I settled on
the ridge close to where I knew the birds
had to be. Then I made one jake call and
the woods came alive with turkey talk.
The next thing I knew, there were more
than a dozen gobblers coming my way, a
mix of longbeards and jakes.
