Friday morning of the early muzzleloader
season dawned a bit cloudy with a
slight northwest breeze.
While I'd taken the day off to hunt with
the smoke-pole, I'd recently seen bucks
working the cornfield I planned to hunt,
so I brought my bow along, too.
Shortly after 8 a.m., I heard rocks
dribble behind me and across a creek.
I turned to see a coyote shuffling along
and immediately picked up the gun.
Somehow, it must have sensed danger and
took off, and my shot did nothing more
than hurry it along.
While reloading, I caught movement to
my right. A large buck working a scrape
was thrashing the tree branches above it.
I immediately switched from gun to bow,
hoping for a chip-shot at this big deer.
After he finished leaving his calling
card, the buck came my way, walking
into my shooting lane at just 12 yards.
Turning to make his escape after he took
my broadhead, the buck tumbled less than
20 yards into his flight.
Shaken, I sat in my stand for a bit
before getting down and tagging the
bulky buck, which tipped the scales at 228
pounds, live weight.
I didn't realize it was the weird-racked
7-pointer I had on camera until I was by
its side. His was the next in a long line
of unique racks I've collected afield in
Penn's Woods.
Given whitetails are Pennsylvania's
most popular game animal, there aren't
many hunters who don't get excited
seeing a buck in the wild. There's just
something about antlers, especially those
bigger racks, that fuel a hunter's fire to get
outside and hunt.
In most record books, antlers either are
scored as typical or nontypical. There also
is another category - unscorable - that's
used if antlers can't be scored as either.
If there was a weird-racks listing, my
bucks could have made it into the books
many times over.
My first encounter with an out-of-theordinary
buck came as a senior in high
school, long before portable tree stands
became the norm. I'd been perched on
a blowdown, bow in hand. A flock of
turkeys was scratching away just over the
top of the ridge and I was concentrating on
them, instead of scanning the deer woods.
