E SHOULD ALL HOPE our retirement plans perform this well. Take
a look at the investment that is Pennsylvania elk hunting. It's paid
huge dividends over the last 20 years, with some of the biggest returns ever
on tap for the upcoming 2021-22 seasons.
Consider the numbers.
Modern-day elk hunting returned to the Keystone State - after a sevendecade
absence - in 2001.
That hunt was historic, but relatively small.
The Game Commission awarded just 30 licenses. Twenty-seven hunters
filled a tag, with 14 bulls and 13 cows comprising the harvest.
Now, compare that to where we are today.
Going into the 2021-22 seasons, the elk herd has grown by just about 100
percent compared to 2001, to somewhere between 1,300 and 1,500 animals,
said Game Commission elk biologist Jeremy Banfield. Aerial surveys suggest
the number of bull elk, in particular, has increased over the past couple
of years.
Elk hunting opportunities, meanwhile, have expanded even further.
They're up almost 400 percent compared to 2001. Whereas 2001 offered
six days of hunting, 2021 offers 29. That includes 15 days of archery-only
elk hunting from Sept. 11 through 25, when bulls are in the rut; the general
six-day regular elk season from Nov. 1 through 6; and eight days of late
season hunting from Jan. 1 through 8.
And here's the real topper: available elk licenses are up more than 600
percent since 2001. There are 187 tags available for the 2021 seasons, an
increase from 164 the year before.
A record 56 of the 2021 licenses are for antlered elk, too. The remaining
131 are for cows.
Now that's a bull market.
" It's cliché to talk about 'the good old days' and remember things as
being better than maybe they were. But the truth is, we're living in the best
of times for Pennsylvania elk hunting right now, " Banfield said. " It's an
amazing story. And it's not done being written yet. "
