are for bulls, the other 39 for cows.
" There are two main drivers behind
that decision, " Banfield said. " First, we
want to address crop-damage concerns.
Second, we've seen an increasing bull-tocow
ratio over the past few years during
our aerial survey and want to bring that
better into line with what's best for the
herd. "
The change in the bull-to-cow ratio is
a significant one.
Between 2008 and 2018, Pennsylvania's
elk herd had somewhere between
28 and 32 bulls per 100 cows. In 2019,
according to the aerial survey, it had 51
bulls per 100 cows. In 2020, that jumped
to 67 bulls per 100 cows.
In the meantime, the archery elk hunt
open only in select Elk Hunt Zones and
the general elk hunting season continue to
provide lots of wonderful opportunities,
as well. The Game Commission allocated
29 licenses - 14 antlered and 15 antlerless
- for the archery season, and 109 elk
licenses - 32 antlered and 77 antlerless
- for the November season.
Combined, the three seasons give
hunters choices while making it easier to
manage elk regardless of weather, habitat
conditions, hunter pressure, land access
and other variables, Banfield said.
" I'm just as excited now as I was two
years ago when we first added the early
archery and late seasons to the mix.
Together with the general season, they
provide additional hunting days, reduce
crowding, and provide diverse opportunities
for Pennsylvania sportsmen, "
Guided or unguided, Pennsylvania elk hunters experience tremendous success. All 36 hunters drawn
for bull licenses in 2020 harvested bulls. Among them, from left to right below, were Paul Martin,
