HAT DIDN'T BEGIN as a quest
became one as the number got closer
to 2,000.
After retiring in 1998, my father, Harold
Herb, developed a passion for groundhog
hunting. An avid deer hunter and lifelong resident
of northern Dauphin County, Dad always
said that hunting woodchucks honed his skills
for whitetails, and he took his largest buck
after taking several 'chucks at 74 years old.
Years ago, our family presented Dad
with a plush toy woodchuck to recognize his
then-newfound hunting passion and prowess.
He'd proudly hang a new sign on it each year
that updated us with his harvest total. As the
number climbed past 1,000, we thought why
not 2,000?
While many woodchuck hunters like the
challenge of shooting at extreme ranges, most
of Dad's woodchucks were taken at under
100 yards. His rifle of choice is a Remington
Model 700 17-caliber bolt-action he received
as a gift from his family on his 71st birthday.
He just sets up in fields he knows chucks
frequent, or follows advice from landowners
who keep him informed on where they're
seeing groundhogs.
His excursions are not far from his home
in the " valley. " Most of his hunts take place
on local farms operated by friends in the Gratz
area of Dauphin County. Landowners always
are appreciative of his efforts to thin their
properties of pesky chucks.

In recent years, though, Dad's harvest
numbers slowed a bit, casting some doubt
on whether he'd reach his milestone goal.
His battling through health issues in 2019
put a damper on his hunting, but with plenty
of support from his family and wife of more
than 61 years, Pat, Harold rebounded strong
in 2020 to reach his goal in July.
Now 87, Dad shows no sign of quitting,
and there's no telling how high the total on the
toy groundhog's sign might climb. In any case,
he's one happy woodchuck hunter!
